The Information Systems Economics, Strategy and Innovation
The Information Systems Strategy and Innovations

Central Concerns and Questions
The Information Systems, Strategy and Organizations research stream centers around the management of IT in organizations to create business value. We emphasize IT management within organizations, where we conduct research on the impacts of adoption and diffusion of IT innovations in organizations, the involvement of users in IS development work, and the impacts of IT management practices on organizational performance. We also study the influence of IT architecture and organizational strategy on IT strategy, the ability of IT organizations to remain alert and responsive to environmental changes, and the use of IT as an offensive and defensive weapon in competition with other organizations. Technologies evolve over time and it is important how to understand how IT is adopted and diffused in organizations, and how the organization is able to leverage its IT capabilities to be agile and effective in the market. The figure below from our research is suggestive of the kinds of analysis approaches that we bring to the study of technology adoption and diffusion.

Related Research
The research in the Information Systems, Strategy and Organizations stream that has been conducted at the School of Information Systems reflects a variety of business technology problems and research perspectives. For example, a number of studies have been conducted on Information and communication technologies (ICT) adoption at the individual, organizational and industry levels, the diffusion and management of IT services outsourcing, and evolution of IT diffusion patterns over time for different technologies. We also have studied the use of leading technologies that support the creation of competitive advantage, and the evaluation of returns on management decisions to outsource IT. Our work has been conducted in a variety of industries, including electronic banking and mobile payments, IT services, the airlines, travel and hospitality, telecommunications and e-commerce. We are currently working to expand the coverage of our research to include the competitive advantage and organizational performance effects of cloud computing, mobile and wireless technologies, and the operation of social networks.

Other research in this stream involves the development of a theoretical perspective for how Internet-based sellers can employ different market, product and price transparency strategies. The research is useful for its prescriptive guidelines for how firms should set relative transparency levels and prices in order to maximize profit. Related work has developed theory for the role of information transparency in electronic markets and proposes an interdisciplinary agenda for research. This has permitted us to study issues related to newly-vulnerable markets, IT-influenced channel competition, the commoditization and decommoditization of products and services on the Internet, and the strategic value of digital intermediation.

Another area of concentration in our research in this area is related to information and communication technologies, and developments at the more aggregated level of economies and societies, especially developing economies around the world, where technology adoption is viewed as a critical enabler of economic growth and human welfare. Our research has explored a variety of issues, including the diffusion of wireless phones, e-commerce, and IT and related technology services in developing countries, IT services as a strategic input for organization and the impacts on the performance of industries, and the impacts of the “digital divide” between the technology “haves” and “have nots” in modern societies.
