New Requirements for PhD Students at SIS, SMU:

The following changes will apply to PhD students admitted from August 2013 onwards. Students admitted earlier are not affected.

The revised program guidelines are given at the following URL, including timelines as well as requirements of the qualifying process and other milestones.

A. Change in Qualifying Process

The qualifying process will now comprise two parts:

(1)    Qualifying examination (oral and written), to be completed latest by Week 14 of Term 1, Year 2

(2)    Research paper, to be completed latest by Term 3 of Year 2

We emphasize that students who are ready may, after consulting their advisor, go through the qualifying process earlier than the deadlines stipulated above. The qualifying process has 3 possible outcomes:

(1)    The student is confirmed as PhD candidate, and receives additional $500/month in stipends

(2)    The student has to exit the PhD program, with an offer to transfer to the MSc program

(3)    The student has to exit the PhD program, with no offer to transfer to the MSc program

B. Extension of Internship Scheme

A PhD student may do an internship in term 1 or term 2, once, by registering it as an ERP. A student pass holder who has completed all the 3 required ERPs cannot go for internship in term 1 or term 2.

We recommend that students defer the 2nd depth ERP till their senior years, to leave open the option of going for internship. This also gives the flexibility of satisfying the ERP by transferring back credit from research done during their residency at CMU-LARC. Alternatively, they can always complete the ERP with their research advisor once they are sure that they are not going for internship or the CMU-LARC residency.
