The PhD programmes in the School of Computing and Information Systems at SMU are scheduled as a 4-year study. The programmes welcome all candidates with a solid academic background and the dedication to tackle complex real-world problems in various areas of Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information Systems and Management. Our PhD graduates shall be equipped with critical analysis and creative thinking skills and have the expertise and passion to address deep technology challenges and develop practical tools to make real-world impact.

Research Training Topics

Our PhD students will be trained to work across research areas, through applied research projects and a broad and deep curriculum covering Software and Cyber-Physical Systems, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Intelligent Systems & Optimization, Pervasive Sensing, Human-Machine, Collaboration, and Information Systems & Management.

The research in the Research Lab for Intelligent Software Engineering (RISE) aims for intelligent methodologies and tools for building and maintaining secure, reliable, usable, efficient software. Research projects cover various topics in software engineering and artificial intelligence, such as software repository mining, program analysis, automated testing & debugging, mobile systems & applications analysis, software security, intelligent software development processes, deep learning & analysis of code, certification of AI systems. We encourage world-class applied research with holistic and innovative views, working with real, large datasets and industrial platforms, addressing real-world problems, and building practically usable technology solutions for diverse kinds of software systems.

Financial Supports

The PhD programme provides full scholarships for all full-time PhD students on a competitive basis. Subject to satisfactory progress, a scholarship holder will receive waiver of application fees, registration fees and tuition fees in addition to a monthly living stipend. Students may also receive additional funding for conference travels and higher scholarship through research assistantship (RA), teaching assistantship (TA), or industry grants. Foreign students who choose to self-finance their studies can choose to pay tuition fees at a subsidized fee rate, but will need to work in Singapore based companies for three years after graduation.
