Research

Overview

Working at the interface of Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research, I am interested in combining machine learning and combinatorial optimization for decision-making in business. More specifically, I am interested in data-driven optimization models, multi-agent models, and metaheuristics to solve use-inspired resource planning, scheduling and coordination problems in logistics, transportation and supply chain management. Quantum Computing is a fascinating area and recently, I started exploring solving optimization problems with quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms. More information about this effort is given here.

The common thread running through my research is a focus on going beyond papers to build usable novel tools and prototypes, a number of which have been testbedded and deployed in industry.

My research statement and a list of keynote/invited talks.

    Ground Response Allocation and Deployment: Visualization, Optimization and Simulation (GRAND-VISION)The system combines data analytics with optimisation and prediction to reduce manpower while maintaining response time standards. The project combines the following elements:
    1. Incident prediction: machine learning of historical data enabling the generation of synthetic incident sets for planning.
    2. Resource optimisation: robust optimisation techniques are used to generate efficient deployment plans and manpower shift schedules.
    3. Simulation: resource plans are evaluated through simulations that may be used to examine solution performance across a range of test scenarios.
    4. Visualisation: enable decision makers to make resource allocation decisions that combine optimization with on-the-ground experience.

    Crowd Management SystemSingapore Patent Number 10201509975U granted on 24 August 2017. The main claim is as follows:
    A method for managing a crowd attending multiple capacity constrained resources comprising the steps of:
    • operatively connecting an operator via an internet connection to multiple users of the crowd to form a network;
    • determining a status of each capacity-constrained resource;
    • receiving a preferred order of attendance from each of multiple users;
    • for each user, computing a schedule based on the preferred order of attendance of the user and the status of each capacity constrained resource, wherein computing a schedule includes coordinating the schedules of multiple users;
    • for each user, presenting the personalized schedule to the user, wherein the schedule comprises the status of multiple capacity constrained resources; and
    • for each user, providing a personalized incentive to the user for following the schedule; and receiving real time updates on the status of each capacity-constrained resource and for at least one of multiple users, performing a re-computation of the schedule of the at least one of multiple users in response to the real time updates, wherein re-computation of the schedule is automatically performed without prompting from the user, and pushing out a real time update to the schedule based on the re-computed schedule using a push notification and an incentive to the user to follow the modified schedule.

    My Teaching Philosophy:

    • An effective teacher must have an innate desire for knowledge and a natural tendency to apply the knowledge in creative and beneficial ways. If the teacher can fulfill this desire by making the material relevant and within reach, then learning ceases to be a chore and becomes a personal desire.
    • An effective teacher must provide a learning ethos that minimizes the opportunity for distraction and laziness. Through a balanced reward and penalty scheme, the teacher can provide the most compelling environment for true learning to take place.
    • An effective teacher must also be constantly abreast in his subject. This comes from disciplined study of the subject as well as creative activity in the subject area. Research is one avenue for this creative activity. Research stimulates the teacher to view his subject from many angles and also compels him to understand the limitations of the current level of knowledge.
    • Despite the best intentions and methods, an effective teacher cannot teach without students who are willing and able. Students must have some capability in the subject area, and the teacher can play an important role in encouraging them to discover their capabilities.
